Union Station Revitalization

IBI Group is a key partner in multiple aspects of the revitalization plan to evolve Toronto’s iconic Union Station, providing much-needed performance upgrades and responsible restoration of the building’s architectural and heritage features.

Client
City of Toronto, Toronto Transit Commission
Location
Toronto, ON
Ongoing Status

Built in the 1920s, Union Station is not only a heritage landmark — it’s also the highest volume multi-modal transportation hub in the country, accommodating 20 million passengers annually and connecting to the city’s subway, regional, and national train networks. Critical upgrades were required to modernize aging infrastructure, and construction needed to be staged in ways that minimized day-to-day disruption for the endless flow of passengers who rely on its access points.

IBI Group is involved in two key phases of the project:

Second Platform

IBI Group is leading the $180 million modernization of the Union Station TTC Subway terminal to meet the modern transit ridership’s expectation of how a station should look and perform. This includes the addition of a new second platform to the south side of the subway, upgrades to the existing platform, and doubling the size of the concourse level area above.

All interior finishes will be completely replaced, and floor to ceiling glass installations at all fare lines will create a brighter environment with new elevators, escalators, and wider stairs designed to improve access and circulation from and to platforms. As a sub-consultant to AECOM, IBI Group provided the design and contract documents for the subway station addition/renovation, and is also involved with the contract administration of the project.

Revitalization

Working with NORR Limited, IBI Group also provided civil engineering and consulting services to support Deloitte’s Development Advisory Services study of development options within Union Station. Our responsibilities included:

  • Design and approval of storm and sanitary sewer connections, water connection for the protection, and construction documents
  • Design of the re-routed Ø1050mm combined sewer as an inverted siphon, complete with inlet and outlet structures
  • Design of pumping station to drain and siphon; obtain MOE approval; contract documents; and preparation of maintenance manuals
